Pets Corner – January 2019
Welcome 2019! This year, consider including your pets in your New Year’s resolutions to get healthier. Read on!
- For pets needing to lose weight, the single most important thing you can do is to switch to a low-calorie diet. A low-cal food means the same physical amount of food (example: one cup of kibble) contains fewer calories, but still allows your pet to feel full.
- Treats can sabotage the most carefully planned diet! Give treats sparingly – one or two at a time.
- For dogs, green beans make a perfect treat. They’re low in calories but high in protein and fibre, meaning they promote a feeling of fullness.
- Exercise is important, but take it slow! Overweight pets should get regular low intensity exercise, with weight loss driven mostly by food changes. Exercising pets too hard while they’re overweight often results in injuries, more than increased weight loss.
Wishing you and your pets good health, and a Happy New Year!
