Pets Corner – June 2018
Hello friends! June 1st is an important date for dogs in Ontario as it marks the beginning of heartworm season. From June 1st to November 1st, dogs should be taking heartworm preventive medication. Here’s why:
- Heartworm is a parasite that is transmitted in microscopic form through mosquito bites. ALL dogs are susceptible to it, whether or not they spend a lot of time outdoors.
- Heartworm is literally a worm that grows inside an infected dog’s heart! As such, heartworm disease is fatal if untreated.
- You can easily prevent your dog from contracting heartworm disease by giving a monthly dose of preventive medication, during the months of the year when mosquitoes are active.
- Your dog will need a heartworm test done by their veterinarian before you can give the medication, to make sure s/he isn’t already infected.
If your dog hasn’t been to the vet yet for heartworm season, now is the time to go!
